Rabindranath in West and South India (contd-16)

Having reached Ernakulam Rabindranath was taken to the King's Guest house of Cochin.
Rabindranath was offered tiffin at the guest house and  was greeted by the people of Cochin.  He was offered   a felicitation paper and a contribution to the fund of Viswabharati.  In reply to his greetings Rabindranath explained the aims and objects of Viswabharati . The Hindu described on 18th Nov;
" The poet in explaining his message referred to the characteristic features of the great epic Ramayana and the works of Kalidasa as  contrasted with Shakespeare's plays and the poetic literature of the West generally.He pointed out how the Indian literature was superior in its treatment of nature as the chief vehicle for the attainment of human ambition and how the poets of the West failed to realise the reality of kinship between man and nature and the interpretation of human life into the cosmic life. He then referred to the glorious traditions of the forest Universities of ancient India and observed that this Institution at Santiniketan was modelled on the same lines with changes suiting the modern condition."
He started for Alwaye on 17th Nov at night and reached there on 18th Nov.
