Rabindranarh and Nagendranath

Nagendranath Gangopadhyay was a smart, handsome young boy belonging to the Adi Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath was attracted to this energetic good looking youth and settled to get  Mira Devi ( born on 13th Jan 1894- died in 1969 at Santiniketan), married with him   on 6th June, 1907 and  sent him  to America after the marriage ceremony for education in Agricultural Science. He was the third one whom Rabindranath sent to America for higher education in Agricultural Science in his own expenses.
 Mira Debi (Atasi)
Rabindranath’s fourth child Mira Debi, who was his third and youngest daughter, was born on 12 January 1894. She was also called Atasi. Mira Debi was married on 6 June 1907 at the age of 13 years 4 months to Nagendranath Gangopadhyay. They separated in the 1920s. Mira Debi died at Santiniketan in the year 1969 at the age of about 75.
Mira Debi and Nagendranath had two children – a son named Nitindranath (Nitu) (1912- 32) and a daughter named Nandita (Buri married to Krishna Kripalani)) born in 1916.

Rabindranath had to bear the educational expenses of Rathindanath and Nagendranath by selling his property at Orissa and took a simple way of living. Both of them came back to India after completing their education within 1910.
During Puja vacation Rabindranath went to Salaidah with his son and daughter-in-law,  daughter , Mira , and son-in -law Nagendranath. They boarded the in the Kuthibari instead of boat and settled there.
Rabindranath decided to make his project of Village reconstruction Programme with the help Rathindra and Nagendra, the two qualified youths.Santosh Chandra, another qualified youth would look after the welfare of  Santiniketan.
During the absence of Rabindranath when he was abroad for 16 months in 1912-13 with  Rathindranth and Prtima, Nagendranath was entrusted with the additional charge of looking after the works of the Zamindary . Before going again to abroad, Rabindranath wanted to see the present position of the accounts of his estate. But he became dissatisfied with the expenses incurred by Nagendranath and wrote a sharp letter to Nagendra on 18th Jan, 1914. He mentioned in that letter different types of malpractices adopted by Nagendranath. He wrote another letter stating explicitly his grievances against him;
" You have to become just in your behaviour with us in the true sense of the term. It does not have any second example how Rathi has trusted upon you and has tolerated your behaviour. You will not be in a position to forgive or to respect yourselves till you repay fully the debt you owe to him.
Nagendranath was earning Rs.300/- only pm as his salary from the estate. So he has to repay the amount from that money. Rabindranath wrote him a letter at the end of February;
" It was decided that you have a loan of Rs 10,000/- from the school which you have to repay back with an interest at the rate of Rs 6 %. That means you have to repay Rs.50/- pm.I asked Gopal to transfer Rs. 50/- per month from Rs. 300/- to school fund . If you sell out your land at Ranchi or hand it over to Rathi then that cost of the land will be adjusted from your loan.
Nagendranath was given the responsibility of teaching Agricultural Science in the school at Santiniketan  but he did not like that job.So Rabindranath had search for him another job.
