Rabindranath and Patrick Geddes - 1923 (contd from July 4, 2012)

Patrick came to Santiniketan and promised to visit Surul  and Ashram to  prepare a detail master plan for a city of Residential University in Santiniketan. Prasanta Mahalanobis informed him that within a few days he would send him some  photos and survey report of Surul and Santiniketan. But due to dilatory working habit the promise was not complied with in time and it was sent in the last week of Feb when Dr. Geddes replied on 26th Feb that he thought it to finish in his vacation if he would receive it in time. But now it became difficult to do it as he was busy otherwise. Rabindranath thought to discuss with him about its financial implication which he could not do even he met him in a dinner party at Bombay and on another day in an exhibition of town planning. Probably Geddes informed all these to Rabindranath who had lost the letter in the busy hours of felicitation of Governor of Bengal. he wrote him on 17th Jan,1923;
" I am afraid there will be some delay in Andrew's starting for Bombay owing to his mission for the suffering people North Bengal. I hope he will be able to meet you some time in February and have a discussion about our building plan and other things."
Inspite of all these drawbacks Dr. Geddes with the help of his son and an architect, Vadnekar, prepared a detail design of the plan. But due to non-availability of fund the building could not be constructed according to that plan. It was done as an when required.
