Interesting talk, mostly about music."  Rolland wrote in his journal " Inde" the details of their discussion. this was the first time he saw Rabindranath Tagore and he described about their first meeting
Tagore contact with Romain Rolland dated from 1919 when Rolland wrote to compliment Tagore on his definition of narrow nationalism. At Rolland's request, Tagore signed his name to La Déclaration pour l' indépendence de l'esprit, which was probably the first organized attempt to mobilize intellectual opinion all over the world against war. Their first meeting took place in April, 1921, in Paris.
" Rabindranath Tagore came to see me accompanying his son. He was in Indian dress - tall black hatmade of velvet and a long ash coloured turban. He was very beautiful - rather too much beautiful - tall, beautfiful face cutting, uniform, like a true Aryan, bright complexion made golden by sunshine and by own lustre; bright almond-coloured two eyes with beautiful shades fallen from eye-lips, long straight nose, smiling face under the moustache, silky beard with three layers gradually sharpened, the middle layer being textent black. Han speak only in English. My sister was my interpreter. arence was like an ancient sage of East. The most charming was his behaviour. simple and modest. What say touches heart and spontaneous, He passed one and half hours time. Always  smiling , bright with intelligence had good interaction with picturesque pose.
