Surul, Sriniketan (contd-1)[ see post-26.10.2011]

Surul (Bengali: সুরুল) is a village in Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Sriniketan now adjoins a part of Surul. It is 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Santiniketan
An annual ceremony was being held in Sriniketan on 6th Feb because The Institute of Rural Reconstruction at Surul was founded on 6th Feb 1922 [Monday 23, Magh 1328] Leonard wrote in his diary on 5th Feb;
"Early this morning Rathi came down to Surul with me and with Kasahara our Japanese carpenter-gardener, and we went round and looked over everything. On our return and after lunch we caught hold of Gurudev and went to the upper room in the Santiniketan house with all the students and directors....We went over the programmewith him, we worked out the vday's routine and parted with his blessing, to pack. The two new Ford lorries, one our very own, ran the baggage and the boys in no time. I fpllowed on a bicyclewith Motru.
The directors and the workers began to work from the next day, 6th Feb. Probably this is the reason to take 6th Feb as the foundation day.
To make the programme a success Rabindranath wanted to purchase more adjacent land and houses.Elmhirst wrote in  his diary on 28th Jan Rabindranath was eager to purchase the Cheap Saheb's old Kuthi. He wanted to construct a room for him on the 2nd floor so that he could come frequently there and could see the beauties of the all aroud.
The Cheap's Kuthi and some attached land were purchased subsequently.
