Somendranath Tagore (1859-1922) expired on 30th Jan 1922

In the year 1922, there were two death news in the Jorasanko Tagore family.
The eldest daughter of Hemendranath, Prativa Sundari married with Judge Ashutosh Choudhury died on 8th Jan 1922, at the age of 57 due to sudden heart attack. Indira Devi wrote about her sudden death;
" Prativa Didi ,too, died suddenly. She was suffering from different diseases and became  lean and thin. She was not suffering, the day when she died, she was going out wearing sari etc in a car, suddenly she felt a serious pain in her chest and fell flat and dis not rise again. Later it was known that she was attacked with angima pectoris.My elder brother-in-law (Ashutosh Choudhury) was crying calling her name Prativa like a child. The scenary was so pathetic, I still feel the sound in my ear."
The immediate elder brother Somenderanath Thakur (standing-second from left) died on 30th Jan. This was known from the diary of Jyotirindranath. On 9th Feb his niece Sudhindranathperformed the pryaer on the day of his obsequies. In the  no record was available about Somendranath other than the "Jibansmriti" of Rabindranath. Some discussion was done by Prasanta Kumar Paul in his book Rabi-Jibani, vol-2, p-25-26. After his prayer Sudhindranath said in his memoirs;
"  He died in the room at the south of the ground floor of the house of Jorasanko. Som Uncle was suffering from neurosis in his whole life.When his sufferings became acute . his inner feeling came out at the surface. He was going to embrace everybody, irrespective of his status. He shook hands with every one , he took the dog on his lap and gave a hug, he was hankering after the scraps of food of everyone, he brought even the sweeper to his bed room and didn't hesitate to ask him to sit down on his  costly cot.
  To the people it seemed to be the action of a mad man but he who knew him, understood how great he was. Som Uncle was, really, a philanthropist. To love the Universe was his only motto. I have passed forty years with him in the same room at va stretch.  I got the opportunity of knowing him which none of this world could understand.I saw him everyday to keep a portion of milk of the glass for a dog or a  cat he had to drink in his breakfast.He always had thrown a piece of bread, or some grams for birds to eat. There was no exception to his routine. One could feel how  the dog named "Phriski"  became overwhelmed with grief. If one who loves the animals so much - who loves the mankind so much cannot be a mad man.
Som Uncle established an Institution in Narkeldanga  for the young boys of our country to train them how to develop physical and mental health in his early life.We too got ourselves admitted in this institution. In every week Som Uncle took us every week to  Museum, or to zoo, or Botanical Garden. After Som uncle being attacked with his disease the institution stopped.In the national history  of our country the name of Som uncle ought to be placed  at the top of the list of the great men   of our country. He had deep attraction for Philosophy. If his health would permit , he would have been the greatest philosopher of thgis country."
We had got another introduction about Somendranath from the memoirs of Soumendranath, son of Sudhindranath and grand son of Dwijendranath;
" The room at the south which my father used as his sitting room , was the bed room of Somendranath, the 6th son of Debendranath He always used to sing old songs. Some unpublished poems of Rabindranath written in his early days were heard from him. We don't think of writing those poems, now they are no more.At one corner there was his cot where he always lied down. He used scented oil for his head and his pillow became filled with ants who came at the attraction of that scent. His complexion  was fair like Champa fower.The colour of his palm was like that of pomegranate. He constructed many humurous song earlier than Dwijendralal..Iswarchandra Mukhopadyay used to say high of his  melody of  voice and said it was better than that of Rabindranath.
He was a good singer of Nidhu Babu's tappa.
