Rabindtanath and Viswa Bharati (contd-16)

On 23 Dec 1918, laid the foundation stone of Viswa Bharati University.His motto was to establish all India cultural centre at this place. The main aims and objects were explained in his essay " A Centre of Indian Culture". But in his tour programme Europe and America in 1920-21 the aims and objects were changed to establish it as an International University. His new plan and Programme was explained  in "The Appeal for An International University", a four page  less-circulated  booklet. When and where this booklet was written and published was not known. It was first revealed in the diary of Romain Rolland on 21 April 1921; " Rabindranath said, he is going  to establish an International University at Santiniketan near Bolpur, in his country. He handed over to me a printed appeal for patronizing this University" . Hence this appeal was found in many letters written by Rabindranath. Romain Rolland also received many letters from Europeans mentioning this appeal.
Prof Arun Kumar Mukhopadhyay had done a nice Bengali version of this appeal of Rabindranath in an essay , titled, " Viswa Bharati-r Utsa Sandhane" published in "Bivab", a special summer issue, 1405;
" In the present crisis-stricken World the signs of assurance and promise, visible clearly, indicates the awakening  of Asia.If this great awakening can be conducted properly, this will create hope  not only in Asia but also in the  whole world  To make this object successful the first step is to open the avenues of knowing each other among the different nations of the world. The proper place to practice this is the University, where we can meet and try to invent truth acceptable to all. We can find the common tradition of human being........."
The last lines written by Rabindranath;
" My hope is that this Institution will represent a future when the minds of the East and West will collaborate to a common civilization and therefore any cooperation from the Western continents in building up will be of great significance and value. With this object in view  I address this appeal to all lovers of humanity in the West whom it may chance to reach and whose hearts may respond to the call of comradeship,from across the Eastern sea." In the last page, " The Rector" related the names of the Institution, address, position, aims, history and constitutional structure. The "Aims and Objects" that was known was;
" The University of Santiniketan tries to realize its harmony with the history and spirit of India itself, gathering together the different culture of Asia, and along with it to accept the best culture that the West has produced in Science, literature, philosophy and the arts,"
With this intention Rabindranath invited European Orientalists Sylvain Levi, Morris Vinternitz, Vinsence Lesni, Sten Konow and other European learned persons  to act as guest lecturer.  Among those Sylvain Levi came with his wife in Santiniketan on 9th Nov 1921. After long absence Pearson came back to Santiniketan . English agronomist Leonard Elmhirst came as in-charge of village reconstruction of Surul on 27th Nov.
Apart from Sylvain Levi, Elmhirst Scientist of Lithuana Dr. Barnard Bay many national and international men  of letters came to the Ashram at the call of Rabindranath.
in Magh issue of Santiniketan in the column Ashram Sangbad it was reported ;
" Art critic Dr, Miss Stella Kramrish came to the Ashram."
