Rabindranath and Viswa Bharati (contd-8) - Nov 1919

The people's committee of Sylhet greeted Rabindranath on the next day , 6th Nov., in the Town Hall at 8 am in presence of about five thousand spectators. The President of Reception Committee, Said Abdul Majid , eulogized Tagore in Urdu language.The felicitation paper was red by Nagendra Chandra Dutta.The reply lecture was published in Paus issue of Pravasiunder the title ""Bangalir Sadhana".
Rabindranath accepting the congratulation replied, "The contact he has got with the people of Sylhet is not for the fame he earned in literature,it is because of the realization of the awakening of the power  they possess for which they have felicitated him."
"Many of us think that the union of trade or politics will bring the unity amongst us. But in my opinion, the unity derived from material thinking is transitory. The relation breaks down when the motive subsides." Citing Many examples of Europe, he pointed out," Friendship developed out of necessity did not last long." Hence in his opinion, " We can be united affectiomately with each other by our unpractical sacrificing attitude."
      He took his lunch in the house of Nalinimohan Sashtri at his invitation.At 2 pm he was greeted by the Ladies Club in the hall of the Brahmo Samaj. In the evening at 7pm he delivered a lecture in the town hall.  In the morning of 7th Nov attended a social family get together of  Srijukta Govinda Narayan Sinha Majumdar  for christening the name of his grand son which was fixed to be "Suvabrata".
On this occasion govinda Babu donated to the fund of Viswa Bharati a sum of Rs 30,000/- only.
He came back to his bunglow and after taking some rest he went to Sylhet College Hostel. From that place the students took him to the meeting place by guard of honor . Four thousand people assembled there of which about 50% were students.After the felicitation paper being read, he delivered a lecture which was published in Paus issue of Santiniketan.
Today Europe has become the teachers of the World and that is not by force, by generosity of their desire.The desire is for knowledge. To know the tricks how to control the forces of nature. This is their desire.This makes them to become teachers of the world.
