Rabindranath went to South India to publicize the ideals of Viswa Bharati. He also got a good amount of donations from the different sources of South India.
The foundation stone was laid down by Rabindranath Tagore on 23rd Dec, 1918, and it start functioning after about 6 months, on 3rd July On this occasion he delivered a lecture which was published in a nutshell in Shraban issue of "Santiniketan".
He said, "In Western country education has a definite motto, peoples are getting inspiration from that goal and are being guided by it which satisfies the other requirements also. But the aim of education is not clear to us, it is looked upon as a means of livelihood. The aim of life is in its complete manifestation. It is above all other things." He had founded Brahmacharyasram with this idea. He thought this would be a call of the universe and not a call of a school teacher.He was thinking that he would remove all bndage of human mind through education. He could not collect huge amount of money as was possible for Benaras Hindu University. He thought if the seed had its own strength of germination then then it would surely flourish one day" .
Viswa Bharati will contain many branches its education. He explain them amongst its professors, " The idea of Viswa Barati is huge but it has appeared before us with a small body. This child has brought immortality in his hand which will keep him alive and will make us alive."
He wrote to Ranu on 11 July 1919;
" It has become a festival of teaching here. Teaching in Pally, Sanskrit, Ceyloni, Bengali and English is going on along with its Grammer and metaphors.Drawing and Music are also going smoothly. On eevening I explained to the boys Bengali Kabya and Kabya of Browning. They became very much pleased.In the morning I took some classes of the younger students. Occasionally I am receiving invitation from Australlia. I am thinking of going again to cross the ocean by ship.The world where I am born must be visited round it once for all. how long I shall remain alive , who knows?"
But it was not possible for him to visit Australia for some political reasons.
