Kumbakonam (Tamil: கும்பகோணம்) (kūmpakōṇam), also spelt as Coombaconum in the records of British India, is a town and a special grade municipality in the Thanjavur District in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located 40 kilometres fromThanjavur and 273 kilometres from Chennai and is the headquarters of the Kumbakonam Taluk of Thanjavur District. The town is bounded by two rivers, the Kaveri River to the north and Arasalar River to the south.
On 11th Feb,1919, Rabindranath with his party reached Kumbhakonam in the noon. The Principal of the College and students greeted them In  the evening he was offered written felicitation paper in the pact up hall of the College;
" The poet after ackknowledging the welcome with gratitude, read a soul-stirring paper, completed just yesterday as if to do special honour to this ancient city on , "The spirituality in the popular religion of India."
