Rabindranath and Viswa Bharati (contd-12)

After establishment of Viswa Bharati there were increase of teachers and students of Santiniketan. as a result scarcity of rooms was noticed. Previously the teachers had their accomodation in the students hostel.But gradually they began to live with their family in the premises of Santiniketan. Some of them took their accomodation in the building known as "Natunbari". Being inspired at the success of the
 " Santiniketan Samabay Bhandar", it was decided to construct buildings in co-operative system. in this regard Rabindranath wrote to Labanya lekha (wife of Ajit Kumar Chakraborty) on 3rd May,
"  here the teachers are going to construct building in co-operative system. If you join in that plan you canget loan with minimum interest from Hindusthan Insurance. They are not taking more than Rs 1000/- only and the building is constructed within Rs,500/- in most cases. The expenses are less because they are doing it in co-operative system." He wrote her on 9th Feb 1920, " I have told Rathi about your desire of constructing a houe here - he is also getting ready.We could not meet both ways due to extreme stringency of monetory position. We are going to construct some rooms and I have to collect money for that by moving from this place to that during vacatiion - for these reasons it became difficult to provide you with a plot of land. Those who are staying here for long, we had to take loan for their living and  are making arrangements for their rooms.
From different countries of Europe Randranath was getting letters in different European languages. He had to write letters to those who were conversant with those languages. He wrote to Pramatha Choudhury at the back side of a letter written in French so that he could make him understand the English conversion of the letter to help him in replying the letter.This letter was written on behalf of the students of Socialist Revolutionaries of France.
He wrote articles condemning the the attempt of exhibition of modern weapons by the European powers;
" The machine guns and airships showering wholesale deaths are grimly serious in a battle field, but outside it they have the various facination of a clever and ugly toy. The dumb wonder of dismay which these can produce upon men innocent of science has an element of humour for those who are vigorously immune from and ashamed of all sentiments. Making every excuse for the intemperance of supetfluous energy suddenly released from an anxious task, we could not believe our eyes when we found men, enormously proud of their newly acquired scientific resources, suddenly setting to work their lates enginesof terror against a disarmed crowd of men, women and children. It was extravagantly disproportionate to the necessity of the case, but only suitable for the megalomaniac prideof frightfulness.
It cannot be true that the chivalry of Europe has all along been a myth, but there must be a cause for such steadily growing impairment of her humanity.My heary is drawn to you, my friend, because I know that you are one of those in Europe whose noble mission it is to remove this cause atb the root."
This is one side of the thoughts of Rabindranath. There is another side. and that is , he is the Acharya of a University.
