To get acquaintance with the research work in Europe he at first went to London and then to Germany. Rathindranath wrote a letter to his father from london on 13 July when he was staying in the hotel, Claiments Inn , of London. Kedar nath Dasgupta, ex-manager of the magazine, 'Bhandar', was there at that time. From London he went to Gottingen in Germany where he heard many lectures in a fortnight. He had to stay here for sometime but he returned to India from the port Marsai in France by ship. He explained the reasons behind it to the wife of his Professor Mr. Seymour in a letter dated 25 July from Gottingen,. He wrote,
" When I came to Gottingen I thought I would stay here at least two or three months, in order to pick up the language a little bit and study the social life and agricultural conditions of Germany. But since learning that my father's health is not so good and breaking down day by day under the strain, I have been longing to go home as soon as possible and have so decided to start from here some time in the next week. He came to Calcutta on 5th Sept.
Rabindranath was keeping in his mind to relieve all his duty in the family and from the Zamindari for pretty long period. He got the opportunity to fulfill his desire after Rathi had come back home. He introduced Rathi with the client and the problems of Zamindary. Rathindranath too started to apply the rules and regulations he had learnt from foreign which he started from on 6th Jan 1910;
Sachindranath Adhikari wrote, "Rathindranth was applying to prepare card of Receipts and Expenditure instead of vouchers just as the system used in foreign. I, personally witnessed the index cards."
Rabindranath wanted to make Rathi established in the family life by getting him married with Pratima, the bride, once decided by Mrinalini, his wife, This was the first widow marriage in the Tagore family held on 27 Jan 1910.
A change was also going to occur in the management of the Zamindary. According to the will of Maharshi, the Zamindary in Berhampore and Kaligram was rested on Dwijendranath, Satyendranath, and Rabindranath. Dwijendranath wanted to sell his share to Satyendranath and Rabindranath for 999 years lease with a fee of Rs 45,000/- yearly (payable in four instalments). The deed of contract was signed on 24 March, 1912, just before the departure of Rabindranath to London. Though the deed would be effected from 14 April 1909.
Satyaprasad Gangopadhyay was serving as a manager in the Zamindari of the family of Maharshi Debendranath and he was also doing anything and everything necessary for the family. But he also wanted to retire from his post which Rabindranath had to grant him with a monthly pension of Rs. 150/- per month payable from the month of Paush.
The house (red building) of Rabindranath at Jorasanko remained almost vacant since Rabindranath was staying at Santiniketan. He had lent the ground floor with Rs.100/- pm to the estate office of Tagore family from Agrahayan 1313. But his son-in-law, Sarat Kumar, was doing practice at Calcutta Highcourt as a barrister from this residence. Moreover, an arrangement was made for Mira Devi to stay at the 1st floor and to hold the marriage ceremony of Rathindranath a portion from the ground floor was also to be used and the rent of lease was diminished to Rs.50/- pm.
