In the evening at 8.30 pm Rabinsranath read the essay " The message of the Forest" in the vast hall of the University of Sorbonne.. Jibanlal Gouba a big description of the lecture under the title "Rabindranath Tagore at Strasbourg" sent to Modern Review the Bengalee translation of which was printed as " Strasbourge-e Rabindranath" in Shraban issue of Pravasi. Rabindranath appeared here in his national dress with a turban on his head.
Sylvain Levy gave him a hearty welcome. Comparing Rabindranath as a soul of India he said in his welcoming address;
" In entertaining , tonight, Rabindranath Tagore, the Univertsity of Strasbourg do render homage not only to a poet of genius and a genius arking the millennium of a great nation,the French University of Strasbourg entertains a sister university of India. r the last twenty years. Tagore has been dreaming to dedicate University to his country , Where India, long confined in her isolation would enter into contact with the thought and civilisation of the whole world . The dream of a poet is in its essence a creation ; does not the Greek name for a poet signify - the creator? The dream is about to be realised through his Shantiniketan valued amongst others grand Institution where India evoves a new future of glory. And re,ched by the reception that he has received amongst us.thinks - again a beautiful dream of a poet - of establishing relationship between his university and ours. We wh ardently that he succeeds . We shall help him with all our forces and we have the right to hope for success. "
At last he finished his welcoming address by explaining the meaning of the name of the poet , "Protector of the sun and the King of the heavens, protect for long and protect always the poet of India and her people."
After the function was over, when Rabindranath was departing from the hall, " some were so touch that they wiped the dust off the hem of his garment with heir lips."
Rabindranath was also moved and wrote to Andrews; " it is a beautiful town, this Strasbourg -and today the morning light is beautiful...This is a delightful room where I am sitting now, with its windows looking over the fringe of the black forest. Our hostess is a charming lady, with a fscinating little baby, whose plump fingers love to explore the mystery of my eye-glasses."
He also tried o explain the European style of Welcome in this letter;
" I am now in the very heart of Europe and I feel that by some amazing good luck I have been able to win that heart. I can not imagine how it could have happened at all.No other poet has received such a reward as I have, at least , in the modern time....I have never asked for it , striven for it, never can believe that I deserve it.However, if it be more that is due to me I am in no way responsible for this mistake...."Aami kaboli swapana korechi bapana akashe" ..."I have only shown dreams in the air" most part of my life, and I never turned back to see if they bore harvest. But the harvest surprises me, almost obstructs my path, and I can not make up my mind to claim it for ny own. All the same it is a great fortune to be accepted by one's own fellow beings from across the distance of geography, history and language - through which we realise how truly one is the mind of Man and what maya are the conflict of hatred and competition of selfinterest."
In response to the relation developed by the love of Rabindranath a "Tagore Committee" was formed to donate a set of Classical books of France to Viswa Bharati.
