It was expected that though Rabindranath was not backed by any organised force still the personal contacts he had could collect a good amount of money. But the things did not turn up so. The Quaker community on which he had some dependence failed ultimately.Secondly, he received a letter on 16th Dec from W. Lusie Carnegie, a big business lady and a social worker, who had contributed in many Universities and Libraries and wife of Andrew Carnegie [1835-1919]'s wife;
(Andrew Carnegie (November 25, 1835 – August 11, 1919) was a Scottish-American industrialistwho led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He was also one of the most important philanthropists of his era)
" While I deeply appreciate your personal note, I feel I must tell you I am unable to take up any new considerations - I have neither ability nor time to take up and study worrld affairs as my husband did, but must cinfine myself to any more limited sphere , where I try to give also personal attention - Regretting therefore that I cannot be of service to you."
Rathindranath wrote in his diary,
" In the lecture hall of Park Theatre Rabindranath had intimate talks with Mrs Carnegie and she at that time inspired him. But the reply he got made father feel very much hurt ..This letter so upset him at the time that he wanted to give up all effort to raise money in America or have anything to do with the moneyed people here. "
In the mean ime Rabindranath went to visit New York City College where 2000 students got their lessons free of cost and about 70% of the students earned money for their own livlihood by working in the evening or in holidays . Rabindranath gave a lecture in their weekly meeting which they listened very attentively. On that very day he went to another school where the small kidiesabout fifty heads are used to study.He recited before them, the Crescent Moon.
In the evening on 22nd nov Rabindranath at the invitation of Herbert Adam Gibbons passed some amount of time amongst his students and then came back to NewYork.
On 23rd Nov he delivered a lecture on "The spirit of literature"in Park Theatre organised by League of Political Education.
