On 24th Jan in the noon, Mrs Strate took Rabindranath in her car to one of the Ladies Organisation of Rich ladies of New York. Rabindranath had to wait for three weeks for this meeting. But after the beginning of the meeting Mrs. Strate behaved peculiarly. She introduced Rabindranath casually and left the place.Rabindranath was going to explain the aims and objects of Viswa Bharati . But all on a sudden a lady started speaking for donations to Huvar Fund, meant for the distressed people of Europe. Rabindranath left the meeting astonished and bewildered.
In another meeting arranged by Mr. Arthur Woods in his house, Rathindranath was questioned, closely by Woods, was there any distrust of the British about the school at Santiniketan ? rathindranath wrote, " I at once felt that mischief had been done and that their backs were already put up."
The last ceremony held at New York was a dinner arranged in the Hotel Astor arranged by Poetry Society on 27th Jan.This was on the occasion of 11th Annual Meeting thrown in the honour of Rabindranath Tagore. An 'index of seats" of this dinner was kept in the Rabindra Bhavan which showed the huge arrangement of the dinner. By the side of the "Speakers table", sitting arrangements of Charles Wharton Stock , Rabindranath, Dhanagopal Mukherjee, his American wife and 22 other VIP guests were made. In 23 tables arrangements of seats of 236 persons with the "index of seats" were arranged .
Charles Wharton Stork (1876-1970) was an American author, a graduate of Haverford and of Harvard, and taught in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Stork produced poems, plays, novels, and translations of Scandinavian verse, and was the editor of Contemporary Verse from 1917-1925.
Rabindranath became disgusted since the meeting organised by Junior League. Because by mixing up his name with the Sanfrancisco Case , secret relation with the German, Anti-British mentality, and lastly de-recognition of Nighthood and by all such conspiracies his good name were vitiated in the minds of the people of America.
Mr. Pond had written to him prior he came to america, 3rd time. A direct result of these happenings was noticed in the cancellation of his lecture in Johnstown.
On the way to Chicago Pond sent a proposal of delivering a lecture there on 26/27 th Jan in a letter written on 27th Jan. Rabindranath, too, agreed with the proposal. But after a few days by sending a letter of P.H.Maffey dated 7th Jan Pond canclled the programme. He wrote in the letter;
" From his report I gather that a strong pro-English feeling led the Superintendent to suspect a motive of anti-English propaganda in the promotion of this meeting."
With all these feelings Rabindranath attended the dinner of Poetry Society.
