MOHITCHANDRA SEN

MOHIT CHANDRA SEN (1870-1906)
A student of English &  Philosophy. Mohit Chandra Sen was an erudite scholar and academician. He joined in various colleges before joining the Victoria College, Cooch Behar as a teacher in English. He was influenced by Keshabchandra Sen and the Nabavidhan group of the Brahma Samaj. He became a powerful orator and Sister Nivedita sought his cooperation in the propagation of Nationalism. In 1905, he joined the Swadeshi Movement and delivered a speech against the Carlyle Circular.
Drawn to Rabindranath’s ideal of education, after the death of Satis Chandra Roy, Mohit Chandra gave up his career as a college lecturer and joined the Brahmacharyasram. Even before he took charge of the Santiniketan School he was associated with it as a member of the administrative committee along with Jagadish Chandra Bose and Ramani Mohan Chatterjee. Rabindranath was grateful to him for helping him during a financial crunch at Santiniketan. He joined the vidyalaya at February 1904, when for a few months the school had to be transferred to Silaidaha. When the school was brought back to Santiniketan in May 1904, Mohitchandra became the principal of the school. He was a serious scholar of philosophy and literature. The absence of appropriate amenities for imparting education at the school in the initial years pained him much, but he tried hard to offer the best to the students. But he had to give up due to his ill health. In his absence the days in the Bhahmacharyasram became tough, creating doubts over the feasibility of such a Vidyalaya. However after a while the school got over the crisis. On recovery Mohit Chandra Sen joined City College, Calcutta in 1905.
Mohitchandra was a connoisseur of literature and during 1903-04 edited and published Rabindranath’s poetical works: classifying these into nine thematic and generic categories. He wrote “The Elements of Mortal Philosophy” and translated into English verse the “Mundaka Upanishad”
Mohit Chandra Sen joined the Brhmacharyasram on 13th Feb,1904 and took  the responsibility of the post of Headmaster, when the school was at Selaidah.
After the death of Satish Chandra Roy his friend Ajit Kumar Chakraborty, B.A., joined in his vacant post. He wrote about Mohitchandra Sen,
Mohit Chandra read many books on education and joined Brahmacharyasram to implement all those ideals. His main thinking in the school was how we could utilise the knowledge gathered from Europe.. He was a learned man and wanted to implement what he learned. He got elderly students admitted and thus made the school big. The number of   students increased from 20  to 50. Mohit Babu had to look after all the matters of the school and also had to keep the accounts. He always read and discussed about Philosophy and literature. Now he had to keep up accounts. The educated personality could not manage the school well. The number of students increased but there were dirth of teachers. A chaos prevailed throughout the school.
