( Sitting Jyotirindranath )Translation and editing: In 1867, while staying with his elder brother Satyendranath Tagore in Ahmedabad, he learnt many things, 1. how to play with the sitar, and 2. painting. He picked up French and Marathi languages.He translated books from different languages into his native language Bengali, the focus being on plays. From English he translated Marcus Aurelius' Meditation , Shakespeare's Julius Caeser. Apart from Pierre Loti and and Theophile Gautier, he translated many books on history, philosophy and travels, novels aand short stories from French.
From Marathi , he translated Balgangadhar Tilak's Geetarahasya. Jyotirindranath proposed a newmagazine Bharati in 1877 and made Dwijendranath its editor. He became vice-president of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad in 1902 -03.Jyotirindranath had 46 vols of published works to his credit, including translation. He always attended a literary gathering (majlis) in the house of his elder brother Satyendranath Tagore.
