Santiniketan (contd-32)

Jatindranath was a student of B.A. class but as he was a front ranking student he joined Santiniketan as a junior teacher. Jagadish Chandra was bringing up Arabinda Mohan as his adapted son. Being  attracted by the ideals of Kabi Bandhu he had given Arabinda to Brhmacharyasram. Rabindranath too did all the arrangements for his education. Jagadish Chandra sent a cheque of Rs. 300/- to Rabindranath as a gratitude. Being perplexed in economic stringency Rabindransranth had no way to accept money from the students though he believed in the ideals of the ancient Guru.
But he hesitated to receive money from his friend.
In reply to  his letter Jagadish Chandra wrote,
My humble donation  had no relation with  pass or fail of Arabinda. Your remuneration would remain unpaid for some more years till your student became successful in his life. It was his belief that he would pay at least a portion of your loan. Let Arabinda be successful with what he learnt in the house of the precept.
After Rathindranath and Santosh Chandra the second batch of students from Brahmacharyasram sat for entrance examination on 1907. Arabinda Mohan Basu and Jogendralal Gangopadhyay were in this batch. They sat in the examination from Hooghly as  private candidates.
Rabindranath was not hopeful about Jogendralal. which became true. Sujit Kumar Chakraborty and Upendrachandra Bhattacharya passed in the first division, Arabinda Mohan Basu and  Arun Chandra Sen passed in 2nd division.
At the news of passing the entrance examination of Arabinda Mohan Basu, Jagadish Chandra donated a cheque of Rs.300/- to Santiniketan.
Rabindranath wrote to Mira Devi, Now our school is full of students. There were 55 students at present, the number of teachers were also satisfactory. The second floor of our building has been completed. 23 students stay there. Probably more students will be coming.
It can be mentioned here that the second floor, as said by Rabindranath, was constructed during the construction of building for Brahmavidyalay by Balendranath. The roof was made up of straw with brick walled. Bhupendranath Sanyal remained absent for long time due to his illness. In his place Jnanendra Narayan Roy was appointed. The letter written to Subodh Chandra by Rabindranath revealed that the presnt set of teachers included Subodh Chandra, Ajit Kumar, Jnanendra Narayan, Satyendranath Bhattacharya, and Akshoy Kumar Basu along with the other teachers Jagadananda, Bidhu Shekhar, Hari Charan, andNagendra Aich
