Banglabhashara prathama barshiki, Parbani, 1325 o 1327 bangavda /

Nagendranath had published a magazine (Pujabarshiki)    for children namely "Parbani" in 1325 Bangabda (1918) but could not publish the magazine in 1326 (1919). This magazine was dedicated to Nitu, his son, at 30 annas. He wrote in the editorial of    " Parbani-1327" @ Rs.2.50;
" I assured the children of Bengal by handing over "Parbani" before the Pujas of 1325 that if it gets appreciation from them, I shall appear before them with a copy of "Parbani" each year. I know that the childrens of Bengal are delighted to receive this "Parbani" but I could not keep my promise. After many attempts I was not able to publish it in 1326. Today I have appeared with the 2nd volume of "Parbani" this year in 1327. Before publishing this volume I approached to several persons for cooperation and if they could have subscribed then this volume would have been more entertaining than the previous one.
In this volume the following writers contributed;
Abanindranath, Indira Devi, Satyendranath Dutta, Chunilal Basu, Priyambada Devi, Sita Devi, Parrymohan Sengupta, and Manilal Gangopadhyay. Rabindranath contributed a song Chutir Gaan, " Megher kole rod heseche" musical note written by Dinendranath and "Suoranir Saadh".

Rabindranath and Nagendranath Gangopadhyay (contd-2)

Rabindranath was anxious about the future of Mira Devi which was evident in letters to his friend Andrews while he was in abroad in 1920s.he wanted his son-in-law (Nagendranath) to be employed in Santiniketan but it was not acceptable to him - but he could not find a job for him outside Santiniketan. That was the reason of his anxiety for his daughter Mira Devi to find a suitable place for her and her children to live in and a befitting livelihood. He wrote his daughter on 15th May 1920 just before he left for Europe in 1920;
" I am very busy as i have to board the ship within a few hours. It is revealed from a letter of Andrews that you will be living in Bolpur till the house is ready for your living in Calcutta. Your house at Calcutta will be very close to that of Ramananda Babu . ....Our sorrows and happiness are not within our control. But we can make by our austerely practice with the help of our inner strength what happens in our fate into a prosperity. My blessings are  for you so that you can only achieve successes to over come the sorrows  into your greatness.
(L to R, four of Tagore's five children, Samindranath, Renuka, Madhurilatha and Mira).
The situation of the family affairs remained unaltered and for which Rabindranath was very much worried. He tried his utmost to employ Nagendranath in the works of the estate of Rabindranath or in the Brahmacharyashram of Santiniketan  but that was not possible. At present Nagendranath was working in an English  mercantile farm, namely, Grace Brothers. But Mira Devi was unable to maintain her family life peacefully with him and wanted to live in Santiniketan with her kids. But Nagendra wanted to keep his son with him frequently just to enhance the sorrow of Mira Devi. As a result Mira Devi had to go  to Calcutta and stay with Nagendranath for well being of their son.
Nagendranath paid some respect to Andrews and hence he had to take the responsiblity of arbitration between the two. He mentioned these,  many times,  in letters written to Rabindranath. he repeated again in the letter written to him on 20th Feb 1921;
" I am anxious about Khoka next time ; and it may be difficult for me to keep him away from Calcutta. The difficulty is that he will be obliged to go to Calcutta for the holidays and then will come the tug of war. But we have had more than I could have hoped hitherto and I shall not lose heart about it. I know how Mira dwells upon it and how everything in her now is in that one thing - to keep Khoka at the Ashram. She knows that she cannot hope any great change in her own life, but she has never been wrapt up in that, because she has always been absorbed in her children. And if Khoka can be here, she can have a comparative relief to her own mind.  But Nogen has been finding every excuse to take him away and I know and he will try to do so after the vacation is over."
In the mean time, the other problems cropped up when Nagendranath had given up the service in Grace Brothers and joined the Non-cooperation movement. He engaged himself to organise the labour movement  of India.He had to shift to some remote village in Behala anf hired a room with low rent. The situation has sometimes turned to such crossroad that Rathindranath proposed to come from abroad with Pratima to stand by the side of Mira Devi and Andrews would be called for looking after Rabindranath to Europe. Any way this proposal was dropped."

Rabindtanath and Nagendranath (contd-1)

Rabindranath was trying a job for Nagendranath in the Agricultural department of Govt. of India. He had talks with the secretary P.R.Gourlay of the Governor of Govt. of Bengal, and wrote a letter to him on 30th Sept;
" I talked to Gourlay about you for long time. He replied that the Imperial service is not within the jurisdiction of Govt. of India. If you apply to the Secretary of State then that application will be forwarded to this Government. Govt. will not offer any service to any outsiders If he offers a post to any Indian not in govt service then there will be a hue and cry - Govt does not want to go so far in normal way. I don't know how i can recommend his name."
While staying at Selaidah Rabindranath was disturbed with his family matters as Nagendranath was not satisfied with his present occupation. Rabindranath tried a govt. job for him and in this respect Nagendranath with his wife and his son hired a bang-low at Poona and lived there in search of a job. But learning that the job would not be available. he wanted to leave that bang-low. On his way back from Fiji Andrews , on Jan 20, 1916, started for Calcutta with Mira Devi. She was pregnant at that time. Rbindranath arranged a house for her and wrote her a letter on 9th Feb;
" I asked Miss Bidyut Prava Dutta to stay with you. She will go to Bolpore within a dayor two. She in her young age is very nice. You will get your intimate friendship with her within a short period. She is friend of Kamal [ kamalaprava, wife of Dinendranath], and a good doctor. You know about your sister-in-law Hamalata, so I need not say much about her. She will be trying to do mischief by circulating one's dialogue to others and will try to make you depressed - but do not take her into account."
On the same day he wrote to Rathindranath to come to Selaidah with Pratima and Mira.
he also wrote to Nagendranath on 4 Mar, 1916, to come to Santiniketan at Dehali where Mira Devi will be living.
Rabindranath asked him to stay in surul and engaged himself in farming at Surul and teaching at Santiniketan in Agricultural Science but that too was not upto his liking. He went to different states of india in search of a job but he could not get it. At last he came back to Calcutta.
Mira Devi gave birth to a female child, Nandita,  at 11pm 12thy July 1915. in the 2nd floor in the room where Mahashi Devendranath used to live at Jorasanko, know as Maharshi Bhavan.Rabindranath wa then starting for America from Japan.
Knowing that nagendranath had decided to stay at Surul, Rabindranath wrote him a letter saying that to his opinion this twas the fittest place for him.

Rabindranarh and Nagendranath

Nagendranath Gangopadhyay was a smart, handsome young boy belonging to the Adi Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath was attracted to this energetic good looking youth and settled to get  Mira Devi ( born on 13th Jan 1894- died in 1969 at Santiniketan), married with him   on 6th June, 1907 and  sent him  to America after the marriage ceremony for education in Agricultural Science. He was the third one whom Rabindranath sent to America for higher education in Agricultural Science in his own expenses.
 Mira Debi (Atasi)
Rabindranath’s fourth child Mira Debi, who was his third and youngest daughter, was born on 12 January 1894. She was also called Atasi. Mira Debi was married on 6 June 1907 at the age of 13 years 4 months to Nagendranath Gangopadhyay. They separated in the 1920s. Mira Debi died at Santiniketan in the year 1969 at the age of about 75.
Mira Debi and Nagendranath had two children – a son named Nitindranath (Nitu) (1912- 32) and a daughter named Nandita (Buri married to Krishna Kripalani)) born in 1916.

Rabindranath had to bear the educational expenses of Rathindanath and Nagendranath by selling his property at Orissa and took a simple way of living. Both of them came back to India after completing their education within 1910.
During Puja vacation Rabindranath went to Salaidah with his son and daughter-in-law,  daughter , Mira , and son-in -law Nagendranath. They boarded the in the Kuthibari instead of boat and settled there.
Rabindranath decided to make his project of Village reconstruction Programme with the help Rathindra and Nagendra, the two qualified youths.Santosh Chandra, another qualified youth would look after the welfare of  Santiniketan.
During the absence of Rabindranath when he was abroad for 16 months in 1912-13 with  Rathindranth and Prtima, Nagendranath was entrusted with the additional charge of looking after the works of the Zamindary . Before going again to abroad, Rabindranath wanted to see the present position of the accounts of his estate. But he became dissatisfied with the expenses incurred by Nagendranath and wrote a sharp letter to Nagendra on 18th Jan, 1914. He mentioned in that letter different types of malpractices adopted by Nagendranath. He wrote another letter stating explicitly his grievances against him;
" You have to become just in your behaviour with us in the true sense of the term. It does not have any second example how Rathi has trusted upon you and has tolerated your behaviour. You will not be in a position to forgive or to respect yourselves till you repay fully the debt you owe to him.
Nagendranath was earning Rs.300/- only pm as his salary from the estate. So he has to repay the amount from that money. Rabindranath wrote him a letter at the end of February;
" It was decided that you have a loan of Rs 10,000/- from the school which you have to repay back with an interest at the rate of Rs 6 %. That means you have to repay Rs.50/- pm.I asked Gopal to transfer Rs. 50/- per month from Rs. 300/- to school fund . If you sell out your land at Ranchi or hand it over to Rathi then that cost of the land will be adjusted from your loan.
Nagendranath was given the responsibility of teaching Agricultural Science in the school at Santiniketan  but he did not like that job.So Rabindranath had search for him another job.

Nandini, Adopted Child of Rathindranath and Pratima

The most important incident in Rabindranath Tagore's family was the inclusion of a new member . The couple, Rathindranath and Pratima, was chidless. They tried to make good their loneliness by some pet dogs or cats. But in the year 1922 they wanted to adopt a child to make up their solitude.Rabindranath gave the name of the child to be Nandini. The detail of the incident was described by   Nandini herself;
" I donot exactly know the date on which I came to Santiniketan where my parents lived permanently. I heard that when I was of 10 months old my parents handed over me to Rathindranath. My parents lived at at a place near Gujrat. My father Chaturvuj Damodar was a business man at that place.He was a follower of Rabindranath, my grand father. They were  regular visitors of Santiniketan  and after some time they stayed there for many days. My mother who gave my birth was ailing for ever. My new mother (Natun Ma), son-in -law of Rabindranath and wife of Rathindranath, Patima Devi , took me from the lap of my mother and looked after me with her motherly affection. I was very ill at that time and there was no hope of my livelihood. My present mother Pratima Devi asked my grand father Rabindranath for her permission to adopt me. So far as I remember that was on the year 1922 when I became a member of Tagore family."
Rabindranath called her by many names affectionately. Mainly by two names, "Pushu", probably came from "paushya" and another Poupee, a French word meaning doll. This name might have been given by the French Artist Andree Karpeles, who came to Santiniketan at the end of Nov,1922. This name was first revealed in the letter written by Rabindranath to Karpeles on 13th March, 1923.

" India has produced many poets in the past who have performed their mission very well and it was the duty of the present day poets of India to revive that mission which has no other than that of linking this country, in the bonds of love and unity, with the other countries of the world. "
He also delivered a lecture in the D.J.Sind College. He reminded that a few days ago Sir John Hubert Marshall and Rakhadas Bandypadhyay excavated Mohenjodaro and Garappa here which could claim a wonderful history of India.

.

  March, 1932
 Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, Chennai [Madras], 600 020, India To the question what is “Theosophy” and how it can be applied to work in daily life, an invocation urged some time ago by the great President of the Theosophical Society, Dr. Annie Besant, in a prose poem of five lines, is the best reply that can be given in a condensed form )
Rabindranath was greeted in Burns Garden by the citizens. The President of the Reception Committee, Gulamali G. Chakla offered him a felicitation paper bound with country made silk. When the memento was offered to Rabindranath a slogan saying "Mahatma Gandhi ki joy" was shouted.. Rabindranath took it as exception and said,  "only the political leaders are, and not a poet".and added " as a poet I claim comradeship. I feel this is not my seat. I wish to be on the same level with you. When you ask me to come before you, you should share with me and do not banish me on a higher platform. I have to come you as your comrade. I wish I could sing to you in the language of your own or that wich is my own.This is the barrier between you and me and it hurts me."
Ananda Bazar also reported in a nutshell the lecture he delivered in Karachi.
