Gitanjali and Selaidah

The letters written by Rabindranath to Hemalata Devi and Mrinalini Devi reveal many aspects of the thoughts of the poems or the songs of Gitanjali. He mentioned in his letters the religious thoughts in Baishnab Padabali and the devotion of love in Suffi's poems, the presence of the influence of  which are found in Gitanjali. Maharshi Debendranath Thakur was a devotee of poet Haffiz (1320-89). Rabindranath also inherited his quality. After a long time he went to Persia and said that his father was a true devotee of the poet Haffiz. He heard from him many poems of Haffiz and its translation. Our heart became filled with the heart of Persia through the divinity of the poems of Haffiz. This time he also read some theories of Suffism which is known from Hemalata Devi.
Santbani of the medieval age, specially the Donhabali of Kavir had a close relation with that the poems of Gitanjali. In the original manuscript of Gitanjali there are 18 Donhas of the Sant poet, Kavir, Tusidas etc  were present. Rabindranath also studied the original writngs of Chand Kabi, Tulsidas and others. Moreover, he had read complete life and works of Kavir. This influence had increased by Kshiti Mohan Sen and probably Rabindranath took the Copy book with Santbani of Kshiti mohan Sen and began to write the songs of Gitanjali (10 Bhadra 1316).
But this information was rectified by Kshiti Mohan Sen in a letter saying that Rabindranath did not write songs of Gitanjali after seeing Kavir bani  rather he showed Kavir Bani to him after seeing Gitanjali.
Rabindranath came to Calcutta from Santiniketan and on the next day (22, Asharh ), he went to Selaidah with Rathindranath. In the train he wrote, 'Garba kore nii ne o nam, jano antarjami' Gitanjali 11/88). They reached Selaidah in the night. He came here to look after his zamindari work. But his mind became attracted with the beauties of nature. He wrote,
After many days I have come to Padma. Today it was bright with sun rays. The river was full to the brim. When I was sitting on the top  of the boat and worshiping God, my mind became  filled with brightness and beauty.  I am pleased by sitting at the middle of  this land, water and sky and  feeling his presence within
myself. I think to remain at this stage of peace and purity and to be absorbed thinking about him. But it is he who can grant me leave as he is  almighty one. He has selected me to do more things.
He wrote 11 songs while going to several places from Selaidah upto 29 Asharh, (13th July),
1. 25 Asharh (9 July), 'Ke bale sab phele jabi',  Gitanjali 11/88-89
2. 25    ,,           ,,    ,   'Nadi parer ei Asharher' ,   Giyanjali 11/89-90
3. 25 Asharh     ,,        'Maran je din diner shese asbe tomar dooare,' Gitanjali 11/90
4. 26 Asharh     ,,       ' Daya kore Ichcha kore apni choto hoye'             ,,     11/90-91
5. 26 Asharh     ,,        ' Ogo amar ei jibaner sesh paripurnata',               ,, 11/  91-92 etc.

Rabindranath's concept about death

In the mean time an untoward incident occurred in Santiniketan. On 10th Asharh (25 Jun) Saroj Chandra Majumdar (Bhola) died due to a severe heart attack. His classmate Sudhiranjan Das wrote in his memoir about this incident :
At that time we, the students of Matriculation examination, used to stay in the new room constructed on the west side  attached to the library (present Pathbhavan office) building. One day it was moon lit night (full moon, 8 Asharh). Surhid, I and some others had been out in the play ground after our dinner at night. By chance we saw that some fellow were moving towards our room with lamp. We came and saw that Bhola was lying on his bed conscienceless and Gurudev was sitting by his side on a chair  spell bound. He was looking Bhola with non-stop eye lips and some medicine of Biochemic was on the tri-pot.After some time  Doctor Haricharan Babu   came from Bolpur , examined his heart, back and pulse and said he was no more. Gurudev was looking pale and sad.
On the next day (11 Asharh), Rabindranath wrote Achyut Chandra Sarkar, one of the classmate of Saroj Chandra,
Bhola died by heart attack last night. Santosh went to Calcutta to inform his mother. Saroj Chandra was dear to every body due to his good behavior. On 26th Asharh (10 July), in the condolence meeting, Trigunananda Roy read ';'Bandhu Jibani' . 'Mrityu' written by him, 'Mrityute' written by Hemalata Devi, and 'Khelabhanga'  written by Hiralal Sen were published in the magazine of the Ashram. May be, those articles had also been read in the condolence meeting.
The students of the Ashram in 1318 Bangabda published a collected works of Saroj Chandra, titled 'Saroj Smrity', a  80 page document containing prose and poetry written by  Saroj Chandra Majumadar.
Just after the death of Saroj Chandra Majumdar the students published a magazine, named "Saroj Smriti" and determined to construct a monument on the place where his funeral was done.
Rabindranath delivered  a lecture in the Mandir of  the Ashram mentioning  his memoir of Saroj Chandra Majumdar. The lecture note was taken by Amalendu Sengupta and published in the magazine 'Shanti' on 15 Asharh (29 Jun) titled 'Mrityu'.
" This death is carrying the souls from life to beyond life, from time to beyond time so death is a living being. Death attributes the proper shape of the soul which we were using for our small work, small purpose, small feelings everyday .You were not able to see his soul because you have mixed with him as friend. He was camouflaged by his outwardly behavior. But the death has taken away all his guards and he had been free from his masks to express his real feature. The death has shown the vast magnitude of his soul which is brighter than anything.
Now you perceive him in this fashion and you have come forward to protect his memory so eagerly. Now you are trying to preserve the immortality he has in him. You want to make him  immortal of the immortality of his soul.
Death has taught me to think that he is not small, he is not my disciple rather he is my Guru."

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-7)

From 18th Asharh to 20th Asharh Rabindranath wrote three songs,
1. 18 Asharh, 'He mor chitta punya tirthe jagare dhire'
2. 19      ,,     , 'Jethay thake sabar adham diner hote din'
3. 20      ,,     , ' He mor doorbhaga desh, jader korecho apaman;
The importance of these three songs was explained by the autobiographer of Rabindranath. At this moment he was having exchanges of letters with Kadambini Devi and was explaining her about his ideas of 'Religion and Society'.
( Kadambini Devi was the daughter of Mahim Chandra Sarkar and wife of Pran Gopal Dutta. She did not have high formal education. But her memory and diligence pleased Rabindranath.  After the death of her husband she got keen interest in Philosophy and Literature and took as her study material 'the collected works of Rabindranath Tagore'. In this context she earned the merit of having exchanges of letters with Rabindranath.)
Sometimes Rabindranath wrote letters to Kadambini Dutta advicing her about her personal life, sometimes about his writings, sometimes about his thoughts, sometimes about his ideals. The letter, written by Rabindranath on 20th Asharh (4 Jan 1909) to Myron H. Phelps explaining the problems of India, was sent to Modern Review for publication at that time.  When he was making some addition and alteration of the  letter written to Myron H. Phelps, his mind became filled with the thought of the songs . Hence the thoughts expressed in the letter was revealed in the three songs. However, the letters written to Kadambini Devi  explained, in short, his ideals on religion.
" He was born in a Brahmo family but he had no prejudice  in worshipping God . He was deeply absorbed in his imaginary thinking of a poetic nature which he inherited in his childhood. He was quite ignorant on what the people say about religion, in his boyhood days "  When he was about 13/14, he raid Baishnab Padabali and became satisfied with its rhymes, rhythms, thoughts and language. He  could also understand, slightly, the theories and thoughts of  Baishnab Dharma. Of course there was little relationship with their religion and the Brahmo Society.  Rabindranath was not recognized  as a Brahmo.
After becoming grown up he entered into the difficult worldly affairs and naturally he had to do some spiritual work. But he always adopted those methods and thoughts which suited him. He discarded the usual processes and explained his action in the lectures delivered at Santiniketan.
He wrote that when we say, we need God and rely on God then we do it as  we do in the case of other  things. But this need is not to get Him, rather it is the need of making union with Him.It is very difficult to unite completely with any one because   the personal identity becomes the barrier.

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-6)

The flow of ink from his pen remained steady, even after coming back to Santiniketan. Three days were left of Jaishtha, but Rabindranath wrote four songs in two days;
1. 29 Jaishtha (12 Jun) 'Tara diner bela esechilo'- Gitanjali 11/64
2.       ,,               ,,          'Tara tomar name bater majhe'- ,, 11/65
3.       ,,               ,,         'Ei jyotsnarate jage amar praan'   ,, 11/65-66
4. 30  ,,           (13 Jun) 'Katha chila ek tarite kebal tumi ami',,11/66
The school began to work  after the summer vacation on Thursday, 2nd Asharh
( 16 Jul) since wednessday was a week off. On 5th Asharh Rabindranath wrote Gourgopal Ghosh informing his consent of admitting a poor student with only Rs.12 a month and added that everything was ok only they were busy with the management of the school. The situation completely changed within a day or two.
Arun Chandra was an ex-student. He had some strained relation with his father, Dinesh Chandra Sen on some issues who made  responsible for this on the system of education in Brahmacharyasram, particularly to Rabindranath because Arun Chandra was not agrreeable to marry without completing his study and without getting himself economically selfsufficient. But Dinesh Chandra was trying to force  him. As a result Arun Chandra left his house and took shelter in his Friend's (Provat Kumar Mukhopadhyay) house. Insearch of the absconded,  his elder brother, Kiron Chandra and his brother in law, Kulada Kumar Sen Roy came to Santiniketan on 7th Ashsarh (21 Jun). rabindranath sent them to Dr. Jadu nath Sarkar in Patna with a letter and wrote to Dinesh Chandra,
I came to know yesturday that Arun Chandra has fled away and Ajit said that he did not go to Patna but he could not say where he had gone. I got a telegram from Arun after they (Kiron Chandra and  his brother in law) had gone. I'm trying to get him back. Probably you know that Arun was determined to commit suicide but he was soft hearted. If you don't take care of himselves, you will loose him for ever. After bringing him from Bolpur I shall send him to you. You can rely on me that I have not given any indulgence to his being fled away. He did not inform me about his movement  lest I would  disuade him. I am taking the responsibility of getting him back as he may do other wise due to  your constant presure.
I shall inform you in time if I fail to bring him back.
The autobiographer of Rabinadranath informed that he has been sent  to Giridi to fetch him and he fetched him on 19 Asharh ( 3 Jul). On 11 Asharh Rabindranath wrote to Achyut Chandra Sarkar that I have brought Arun Chandra by a messenger and send him to Calcutta. he wrote to Arun Chandra on 19 Asharh,
I am much pleased to know that you are passing away happily.
Dinesh Chandra let his son pardoned but he did not pardon Rabindranath.
It took many days to revive their relation.
Apart from all these hazards Rabindranath wrote many songs for Gitanjali,
1 Asharh (15 Jun) ' Amar ekla gharer arhal bhenge'- Gitanjli 11/67
2    ,,        (16 Jun) ' Eka ami phirbona aar'                      ,,       11/67-68
3    ,,        (17 Jun) ' Amare jadi jagale aaji Natha'            ,,      11/68-69
3    ,,             ,,       'Chinna kore lao he more'                   ,,       11 /69
3    ,,             ,,       ' Chai go ami tomare chai'                  ,,        11/70
4 Asharh  (18 Jun) 'Amar e prem nay to bhiru'                ,,        11/70-71
4     ,,            ,,        ' Aro aghat saibe amar'                      ,,        11/71
4     ,,            ,,        ' Ei Korecho bhalo nithur'                 ,,         11/72
5     ,,         (19 Jun) ' Debata jene dure roi daranle'         ,,         11/72-73
6     ,,         (20 Jun) ' Tumi je kaaj korecho,'                   ,,          11/73
                                  7     ,,         ( 21 Jun) ' Biswa sathe Joge jethay biharo'    ,,          11/74
                                   7    ,,              ,,         ' Dako dako dako amare'                ,,          11/74-75
Through out the month of Asharh, construction of songs remained unhindered inspite of several ups and downs in the life of Rabindranath. He wrote 15 songs 8 Asharh to 21 Asharh.

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-5)

Rabindranath came to Calcutta back from Tindhoria on 22 Jaishtha (5 Jun). He he halted there for a week. Rajani Kanta Sen was then waiting for his death at a cottage at Medical College Hospital. He was attacked with irrecoverable cancer in his throat. He could not talk. He used to answer any question and express his feelings by writing. Rabindranath was acquainted with him on 21 Agrahayan, 1315 (6 Dec, 1908) at the inaugural ceremony of the new building of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. The song,
'Shunao Tomar Amrita Bani', written by Rajanikanta in the tune of 'Danrao Amar Ankhira Age' was published in Jaishtha issue of Supravat. In spite of the mental uneasiness of the environment of the hospital Rabindranath went to  see his immortal follower  on 28th Jaishtha (11 Jun) in the morning.Autobiographer of Rajanikanta Sen, Naliniranjan Pandit wrote,"Rajanikanta had a desire for long time, today that was fulfilled. Having seen Rabindranath at his bedside when he was seriously ill, he welcomed him with gratitude and his head bowing down. One with full of devotion and the other with  emotion met together. Rabindranath asked him to send his son to Brahmacharyasram. Rajanikanta's daughter Santibala and son Kshindramohan sung the song, 'the Bela je phuraye jay, khela ki bhange na hay,' before Rabindranath and Rajanikanta himself played the harmonium.
It was also published in the 'Bengalee' paper,
'Babu Rabindranath Tagore, paid a visit to Babu Rajani Kanta Sen of Rajshahi at the cottage ward of the Medical College Hospital on saturday morning. Rabi Babu went straight to the invalid's room and took his seat on the sick bed. Rajani Babu expressed his feeling in writing and Rabindranath was visibly moved. The farewell was really touching. Mr. S,K. Lahiri also visited Rajani Babu.
While staying at Calcutta, Rabindranath wrote 5 songs of Gitanjali,
1.24 Jaishtha (7 Jun, 2010), 'Daya diye habe go mor', Gitanjali 11/61 Swara-37, Bhairabi-Ektaal.
2. 24 Jaishtha ( 7 Jun), Sabha jakhan bhangbe takhan.     ,,         11/62

and he went back to Santiniketan on that day.

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-4)

Jaishta 1317, very few publications were out of Rabindranath in different magazines excepting one. A picture drawn by Nandalal Basu, titled 'Diksha' was published in Bharati. Rabindranath wrote a song explaining the meaning of the picture. The song was;
'Nibhrita praner debata jekhane jagen eka';
After the end of the preliminary steps of the marriage of Ajit Kumar and Labanya in the month of Baishakh, Rabindranath wrote a song on 17 May,
'Tora shunis ni ki shunis ni tar payer dhwani', Gitanjali 11/51Swara-38.Raag-Sindh-Jhnap Taal.
Ajit Kumar joined Santiniketan just after passing B.A.(Pass) without honours. His relatives were not satisfied with his work of joining with small salary. Moreover, he had the responsibility of maintining his mother and his two brothers. He had some interaction with his mother in 1315 for keeping her with him. There was some crisis for his marriage with Labanyalekha. Apart from these reasons, he was not satisfied with the deviations through which the school was running at present, He wrote Rabindranath on 28 Feb 1912,
'I am seeing that this is gradually going to be a school. The working programme is so extending and persons with completely opposite mentality is becoming assembled here the it is difficult to feel the melody with which I have been attracted.'

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-2)

Rabindranath addressed the student of Brahmacharyasram in the month of Agrahayan,1316 (1909) by saying that they were born in an age of glory when the whole world is trying to construct their own life and their own country in a new light after destroying the old thoughts and habits. He asked them not to spoil their life without joining the ceremony of the whole world being absorbed in some triffling matter. He wrote a song,
'Amala dhabala pale legeche' on 9th Agrahayan, 1316, Gitanjali-11/13-14;swara-50.  On 10 agrahayan he wrote, 'Oi asana tale matira pare,; Gitanjali-11/38. publishe in 10 Mar 1910. in Bangadarshan.
Last year Kshitimohan Sen requested Rabindranath to distribute his wealth of knowledge earned by his religious abstraction to them which in due course was the beginning of 'series of instruction at Santiniketan'. This year he also approached Rabindranath and wrote,
'The month of Agrahayan is again appearing. I asked  him to supply some  'Bedik-Mantra' translated in Bengali. He replied that he had already translated some Bedik Mantra in Bengali. But that was lost.
He again started to translate some Bedik-mantra in Bengali on 22nd Agrahayan. Before that, on 20th (6th Dec) Agrahayan he wrote a song, 'Aloy alokmay kore he'; Gitanjali11/37 Swara-38.

Gitanjali and Santiniketan (contd-1)

19 Aswin (5 Oct,1909) at Santiniketan Rabindranath wrote a song, 'Ei malina bastra chcharte habe'- Gitanjali 11/34-35. He wrote letter to Ajit Kumar Chakraborty on 4th Aswin, which bears some resemblance with this song. The preliminary draft of the song was,
Samay bujhi hoyeche eibar
Chcharte amay habe ahankar.
Dekha amar habe tahar sane
Ei barata esechche mor mane,
Sajte ebar habe Shovana Aabharane
Gante habe pushpamalar har.
He wrote another song , after coming to Selaidah,  on 25 Aswin (11 Oct), 'Gaye  amar pulak lage'-Gitanjali-11/35 Swara-38. The autumn of Selaidah was vividly described in this song. He informed Kshitimohan Sen, 'Sarada Lakshmi had betrayed me and brought me on this lonely bank of the river but did not deceive me.
On 27 Aswin (13 oct), he wrote another song , 'Prabhu aaji tomar dakshina hat..'- Gitanjali-11/36. Swara-37. He sent the song to Ajit Kumar Chakraborty and wrote , ' for the of Rakhi-Bandhan, I send a song to you, hope that you will get it in time.' Though the famous song of Rakhi Banmdhan was 'Banglar Mati, banglar jal' was written by him. But his mission was not fulfilled. But when the teachers and the students wanted to celebrate the day, he could not oppose it and wrote a letter on 23 Aswin (9 Oct) to Ajit kumar Chakraborty,
'The emotion and feelings with which the whole country became excited, Santiniketan was free from that. Moreover, i don't think that such feeling was appropriate in a school. In fact, that was not even proper. I had an idea of remaining with you upto puja vacation, I would have tried to make the celebration  of 30th Aswin successful in a different manner and in a befitting manner. I did not encourage narrow sense of opposition or of envy due to that.I did not allow Rakhibandhan to be mixed with  temporary excitement or sense of division.....' He wrote, on the same day,' Jagate Anandajange amar nimantrana' ;Gitanjali-11/36-37;Swara-37.
Here he wrote four more songs.

Gitanjali at Santiniketan-1909 and some manuscriot

On 26th Ashara (10 July, 1909) Rabindranath left Santiniketan and again came back on 23rd august (7 Bhadra). He stayed there from 10 Bhadra to 18 Bhadra and wrote 18 songs in nine days. On some day he wrote more than one song. On 16 Bhadra he wrote 5 songs.
This time Rabindranath wrote the songs of Gitanjali in a new manuscript. The manuscript was at the custodian of Kshitimohan Sen. His son Kshemendramohan Sen gifted the manuscript to Rabindrabhaban. It was rapped with  cloth of pink colour and with light and shade design made by Herbert Sherring Company of London.  This copy book was first used by another person who wrote 18 Hindi Dohas with ink from the second page keeping the front page blank. Some body was of opinion that those were written by Rabindranath himself which was not believable by another section of persons.
This was a peculiar behaviour of Rabindranath to use others copy book, within his reach, as his manuscript . He was used to do this several times. He wrote the poems of 'Shisu Kabya Grantha' in 'Amar Khata' of his brother-in-law's wife Nalinibala.
There were 188 pages in the above manuscript of Gitanjali. The original manuscript  was microfilmed before it had come to Rabindrabhaban and it was made to hardbound in two volumes after photocopying every pages with accession no. as 427(i) and 427(ii). It was revealed that the pages were arranged, by whims, after the original binding was destroyed. Rabindranath was in the habit of  writing poems by making the copy book turned over. But since the pages had been rearranged it was not possible to find the original outlook. As a result it became difficult to determine the time of writings of the articles outside Gitanjali.
Gitanjali contained 157 songs and poems. But all of them were not present in this manuscript. The manuscripts marked 1 and 3 were not yet available. There were 2 and 4 manuscript with Mira Devi-Kripalani's collection where two songs -- "Ami Bahu Basanay Pranpane Chai" written on 27th July, 1907 ( 12 Ashara 1314) and   "Bipade More Raksha Karo" written on 11 Ashara were present. These two songs were written in Calcutta before his son-in-law  went for America. That manuscript also contained no.5- "Antara Mama Bikasita Karo" and 11-13 no. three songs written for the dramma of Autumn.
Another manuscriot of Gitanjali arrived at Rabindrabhaban from the collection of Mohanlal Gangopadhyay. By the way, it was better said to be a press copy rather than a manuscript.
The song, Rabindranath wrote in the original manuscript was "Jani jani kon aadikaal hote " Gitanjali-11/20 written in Bolpur, 10th Bhadra, 1316. Rag-Kedara.
In the night of 10th Bhadra he wrote, "Tumi Kamon kore gaan koro he guni" Gitanjali-11/21.Raag-Khambaj;
"Aman arhal kore lukiye gele chalbena", Gitanjali11/22. Raag - Tori-Bhairabi and "Jadi tomar dakha na pai prabhu" Raag- Kaphi Gitanjali-11/24.Swara-37.
12 Bhadra, (28th Aug, Saturday) He wrote,  ' Jadi tomar dekha na pai prabhu..'. Raag-KaphiGitanjali 11/22-23. Swara-38. and 'Heri aharaha tomari biraha..'Swara-37. and 14 other songs.
